Age for Registration

Registration in Rugby Xplorer will automatically apply to the player's date of birth. The age of your child follows the calendar year eg, if your child turns 8 in 2026, on January 1 or December 31, they are still u8.

There is no option in the registration funnel to select an alternative age group. That process needs to be triggered  by contacting us. If you wish your child to play up a year or down a year please email the Registrar with this information or the relevant VP Juniors or VP Minis to consider. Not all requests will be granted.

Where your request falls outside of the permitted dispensations you will be required to submit more forms and information and your player will be subject to an offsite formal assessment prior to the season which is conducted by the SJRU.

Parents (and players if appropriate) are involved in these decisions at all times and if there are any concerns about the process and parents are encouraged to talk to the WRC President about their concerns.

Here is an AGE GUIDE for the 2026 Season

2010 u16 | 2011 u15 | 2012 u14 | 2013 u13 | 2014 u12 | 2015 u11| 2016 u10 | 2017 u9 | 2018 u8 | 2019 u7 | 2020 u6 | 2021 u5

Size for Age

If a player is not requesting a change in their age group, but the player is of a height or weight that is under or above the Rugby Australia guidelines, then for the welfare of the player and the welfare of other players, your player may be required to play in an age group which is different to their chronological age.

This may also require a mandatory offsite formal assessment prior to the season which is conducted by the SJRU.

Parents (and players if appropriate) are involved in these decisions at all times and if there are any concerns about the process - parents are encouraged to talk to the WRC President about their concerns.

Playing with Friends

At Wahroonga we encourage players to bring along a mate and play with friends. In the Minis age groups u6-u9 we cannot guarantee all requests  but we do our best to place children with friends. To make team organising as smooth as possible we encourage friends to come to our come and try rugby events and then register around the same time.

From u10 we have internal trials where there can be more than one team in an age group. Then as a team, the Wahroonga Junior Team will then be graded externally by the SJRU against other teams in Sydney. We believe even if a player does not end up in the same team as their friend in a particular season, they will continue to develop friendships across the club. Grading is done annually and kids move teams depending on skill sets they have developed, roles needed within the team (forwards/backs/centres) and new players. Wahroonga Rugby Club follows a Junior Player Selection Policy.

We welcome players who reside in our local area

We may have players from other areas including country or greater metropolitan or regional areas who wish to play in Sydney competitions and wish to join our club. They may go to school locally or have local family or friends.

It is possible even after you have submitted your registration to our club and made payment, that we are unable to accept that payment or your registration under the SJRU Competition Rules. This usually happens  because we are subject as a club to import or transfer rules in relation to players. As a club we strictly comply with our obligations when it comes to ensuring that players are not poached or taken from other clubs outside the competition rules. If your registration meets this criteria and we need to assess your registration against the competition rules we will advise you this is the case. If there is any other reason we cannot accept your registration, then we will inform you and advise how to seek a transfer or a refund from the various rugby bodies.
