Girls Rugby at Wahroonga

Rugby is a game for all and we are thrilled to support all girls at Wahroonga, no matter their playing experience. Girls can start as young as 4 years old in our Minis, playing mixed teams up until U12. From U13, girls play in their own competition per SJRU rules. We also have exclusive opportunities for girls wanting to experience rugby in a non-contact format.
Whether they start in the minis or our junior mixed teams or are looking for a girls only option at the club, we have some exciting training and wellbeing initiatives planned for girls that join our club in 2026.

What does the girls' program look like in 2026?

Minis Competition - U6 to U9

Girls and boys play together in under 5s to under 7s in non-contact 7 a side rugby.  Games include the non-contact Try Tag Rugby format, with tackling introduced safely at the end of the U7 season. In the under 8s and U9s, skills continue to develop in a fun and safe environment. Games are usually played on a Saturday and training is on a Friday night.

Registration is open now through Rugby Xplorer.

Juniors Competition - u10 - u12

Girls and boys can continue to play together in mixed teams without any restrictions in the first three years of the junior competition.  This season usually runs from April to August and is played on a combination of Friday nights and/or Sunday. Training night is dependent on the age group but is either Tuesday or Thursday.

Girls who turn 13 or older in 2026 play in an all girls team.

Registration is open now through Rugby Xplorer.

Girls only teams - Juniors U12/U13 - u18 (opens)

Winter season - Sera Naiqama XVs

Girls can participate in a XV a side format for a full winter season.  The games will be played under the 'Game On' Principle - if teams are short, the games revert to minimum numbers. The lesser team will play with 10 a side minimum.

Games are on Sunday. Time of game will depend on number of teams in the competition and venue options. Training will take place either Tuesday or Thursday night. Games will be run on a home and away format so we will have games at Cliff Oval for our teams.

XVs are a great opportunity for girls who play 7s at school to further their skills

Registration is open now through Rugby Xplorer.

Girls only teams - Tri Tag

Juniors U10-U11 Winter Season

SJRU are seeking expressions of interest from clubs with girls who want to experience rugby in a non-contact environment. Tri Tag uses a unique three-tag belt system to simulate match play including lineouts and scrums without tackling, making it suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Juniors U12-U18 Tri Tag State Championship – Sunday 8 March

Tri Tag State Champs is a great opportunity to give Tri Tag a go in a fun, gala environment. Teams are grouped U12-U14 and U15-U18 and we welcome girls with all levels of experience to represent Wahroonga Junior Rugby Club at this fun, one day event.

Tri Tag options are not currently available for registration on Rugby Xplorer.

Girls only teams - Juniors U12/U13 - U18 (opens)

Spring season (October/Noveber)- 7s rugby

Girls will have one opportunity to participate in a 7s rugby season later in the calendar year. This page will be updated once season details are confirmed.

Representative Pathways

Wahroonga Junior Rugby Club is also part of the Gordon District and we are able to facilitate the representative pathway for those girls who choose to participate at that level. The opportunity to get involved in district rugby generally commences in the U10-U12 age group in a mixed team and is girls only from around U13. We will always provide our girls with information about accessing trials for these opportunities.

Now is your chance to become part of the Wahroonga Tigers as a girl, either to play mixed or girls only rugby at our club.  If you would like to register or need more information please contact us on vp_girls@wahroongarugby.com.au.  At Wahroonga Junior Rugby Club we believe rugby is a sport for everyone.
